Woman Farmer Competition

The Woman Farmer of the Year Competition is hosted annually by the Woman Farmer Foundation. It has been successfully hosted since 2007 and is open to Women and youth on Swazi Nation Land active in agribusiness. The foundation works collaboratively with the Ministry of Agriculture (extension department) in facilitating the availability of entry forms in all communities nationwide through the Rural Development Areas outlets of the four regions.

The judging for the competition is based on three criterions with specified percentage marks allocated as follows; Main enterprise (65%), Home management (25%), and participation in community development activities/ display of leadership qualities (10%).

Enterprise Parameters classified according to the Large and Small scale categories:

Beekeeping 5 � 10 hives 11 � 50 hives
Legumes 1 � 3 ha 3 ha or more
Vegetables 0.2 � 0.5 ha 0.6 � 1.0 ha
Broilers 500 - 1000 chickens 1001 or more chickens
Layers 100 - 300 chickens 301 or more chickens
Indigenous Chickens 10 - 20 chickens 21 - 50 chickens
Orchard 5 - 10 trees 11 or more trees
Maize 1 � 2 ha 2.1 ha or more
Feedlot Cattle (herd) 10 � 15 16 or more cattle
Goat (herd) 20 � 30 31 or more goats
Piggery 5 � 10 11 or more
Root crops 0.2 � 1.0 ha 1.1 ha or more
Cotton 0.5 � 2.0 ha 2.1 ha or more
Dairy (herd) 3 � 5 cows 6 or more cows

Some Rules and Regulations for the Competition

  • To be eligible to compete in the competition an entrant must have been active in agribusiness for at least a year.
  • The competition is open to women and youth involved in commercial food agriculture production.
  • The winner is not eligible to re-enter the competition in the years that follow.
  • The winner also becomes an ambassador for the Woman Farmer Foundation. Winner is also expected to motivate and mentor other women and youth, in her community and the nation at large, to partake in agribusiness.
